What Commission Rate Should a Brand Offer TikTok Shop Affiliates?

By the Creator2Commerce team · Published · Updated · 7 min read

Short answer

There is no single right TikTok Shop affiliate commission. TikTok lets brands set 1% to 80%, shows a suggested rate at setup and says a competitive rate helps creators notice you. Work out the most you can pay per order after fees and costs, set Open near the suggestion, and pay proven creators more through Target Collaboration.

Key takeaways

  • TikTok allows 1% to 80% commission in both Open and Target Collaboration.
  • Start from your margin, not from what other sellers say they pay.
  • Use Target Collaboration to pay proven creators more, and set a Shop Ads commission only if you plan to run their videos as ads.

This guide is for DTC brands deciding what to pay creators on TikTok Shop. It does not give you a magic number. No TikTok page publishes a rate that works for every category, and rates other sellers mention online depend on their margins. What it does give you is the range, how TikTok applies rates, and a margin-first method to choose yours.

What TikTok actually says about commission

  • The allowed range is 1% to 80% for both Open and Target Collaboration (TikTok's "8 Tips" matchmaking guide).
  • TikTok shows platform-suggested commissions when you set up a collaboration.
  • Target Collaboration is usually set higher than Open for the same product, and a higher Target rate shows creators a "higher commission" badge.
  • In its troubleshooting section for sellers with no affiliate orders, TikTok asks whether commissions are within its suggested range, and says higher commissions help products stand out in the Product Marketplace.

Step 1: Work out your commission ceiling

Before you pick a rate, find the most you can pay on one order and still be happy. A simple worksheet:

LineWhat to enter
Selling priceYour TikTok Shop price after any discount you run
Minus TikTok Shop feesUse the fees shown in your Seller Center for your category
Minus product costLanded cost of goods
Minus fulfillment and shippingYour own or fulfilled-by-TikTok costs
Minus sample cost (spread per order)What you spend on free samples divided by orders they drive
= Contribution before commissionThe pool commission comes out of
Commission ceilingThe share of that pool you are willing to give a creator

Fill this in with your own numbers. We have not included example fees or margins because they vary by category and change over time; check your Seller Center for current figures.

Step 2: Set your Open Collaboration rate

Open is the rate every creator sees. A practical approach:

  1. Start at or near TikTok's suggested rate for the product, as long as it is under your ceiling.
  2. Pair it with free or refundable samples. TikTok says samples significantly improve the chances that invites are accepted.
  3. Watch sample requests, posts and orders for a few weeks before changing anything.
  4. If you get few requests, look at sample setup, stock and product listing first, then the rate.

Step 3: Pay proven creators more with Target Collaboration

Target Collaboration lets you offer one creator a better deal without changing your public rate. TikTok says that while a Target Collaboration is active, its rate applies to that creator's orders on the product, including orders through Open; when it expires, the Open rate returns.

Target also supports flat fee, commission and mixed deals. A flat fee plus commission can make sense for creators with a record of posting on time and driving orders. Our guide on how to retain TikTok Shop creators covers when to move someone onto a retainer.

Step 4: Decide on a Shop Ads commission rate

If you plan to boost creator videos in GMV Max, TikTok has a separate, optional Shop Ads Commission Rate. Key points from TikTok's ACA guide:

  • If you do not set one, creators get your standard commission on ad-driven orders.
  • It only applies to orders that come from the ad. Organic orders on the same video still get the standard rate.
  • It is paid through the affiliate program, not from your ad budget.
  • Changes to it take effect immediately.
  • In Partner campaigns it cannot be edited once submitted.

Rate levers by goal

GoalLever to pull first
More creators requesting samplesSamples on, stock healthy, rate near the suggestion
Better acceptance from handpicked creatorsTarget invite with a rate above Open, plus samples
Keep a top creator postingTarget with commission plus flat fee, agreed deliverables
Run creator videos as adsSet a Shop Ads commission you can afford on ad orders

What to avoid

  • Copying a rate from a forum post without checking it against your own margin.
  • Setting Open above your ceiling to "win" creators, then cutting it later.
  • Raising rates when the real problem is no samples, no stock or a weak listing.
  • Forgetting that Target overrides end. Tell creators before a Target rate expires.

Frequently asked questions

What commission should I offer TikTok Shop affiliates?

There is no universal number. Start near TikTok's suggested rate if it fits under your margin ceiling, offer samples, then pay proven creators more through Target Collaboration.

What is the commission range on TikTok Shop?

TikTok's matchmaking guide lists 1% to 80% for Open and Target Collaboration.

Is a higher commission always better?

No. TikTok says competitive commission helps, but its troubleshooting list also covers stock, samples, creator matching and product choice. Fix those before paying more.

Do creators get a different rate when I run their video as an ad?

Only if you set a Shop Ads commission rate. If you do not, TikTok pays them your standard commission on ad orders.

Does the Shop Ads commission come out of my ad budget?

No. TikTok says it is paid through the affiliate program, not from the ad budget.
